TAVISTOCK
A charming market town on the River Tavy and 6 miles from Lydford. Once a stannary town where locally-mined metal was weighed and was also the home of Sir Francis Drake.

OKEHAMPTON
A market town 6 miles from Lydford with its own Norman Castle owned and managed by English Heritage. The town has an interesting Victorian Shopping Arcade and the Museum of Dartmoor Life is worth a visit.

MELDON
Above Okehampton lies Dartmoor's two highest peaks - Yes Tor (618m) and High Willhays (621m). Below them lie Meldon Reservoir which offers wind surfing, sailing, canoeing and fishing, the Meldon Station visitors centre, and access to the Granite Way where you can cycle all the way to Lydford House.

THE COASTS
One hour to the North are Padstow, Tintagel, Bude and Clovelly. One hour to the South are the South Devon and Cornwall coasts. The South Hams include Dartmouth, Start and Prawle Point, Salcombe, Bigbury and Slapton Sands. Nearer to Plymouth are Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers. Further South into Cornwall finds Whitsand Bay, Looe, Polperro and Fowey.

HOUSES AND GARDENS
- Cotenhele, a remote medieval house in the Tamar Valley.
- Buckland Abbey, the 13th century home of Sir Francis Drake.
- Castle Drogo, combining the grandeur of a medieval castle with the comforts of the 20th Century.
- Lanhydrock is one of the finest houses in Cornwall, set in 450 acres of woodland and gardens with many rare plants.
- Saltram House, with its sprawling landscaped park.
- The Eden Project is less than an hour away and a good destination for a rainy day.
- The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a beautiful and mysterious place, having been restored in 1990 after 75 years of neglect.
